Soft Landing Dampers

Soft Landing Dampers are used when components are lowered down onto subsea installations. Such equipment has been designed to withstand a certain amount of G forces. To prevent the equipment from being damaged when landing, dampers are used to soften the impact. When constructing dampers, the following factors must be taken into consideration:
- Weight of components
- Lowering speed
- Tolerances of the components to be lowered
- Damping length

The dampers are designed so that the energy is absorbed as evenly as possible across the entire stroke of the damper. This is mainly achieved by throttling, so that the area of the nozzles become smaller as the speed decreases.
